Presentation guidelines

Oral presentations

All oral presentations will be required in PowerPoint or PDF for presentation on site (16:9 format). You will give a 12-minute presentation, allowing time for questions from the audience. The sessions are 90 minutes long and will include up to 6 speakers per session.


Scientific posters

Posters must have a maximum size of 114 x 101 cm  / 45 x 40 inches (width x height). Posters will be presented in dedicated sessions over two days. Posters will be on display throughout the meeting.


Poster competition

Registered participants to the poster competition must upload their poster in .pdf format before Friday, August 24 EOD, following this procedure:

  • Access your abstract submission account
  • On the "Submissions" tab, find your accepted poster submission. Note: Your submission will appear as "incomplete" until you upload your .pdf file
  • Click on your submission and scroll down to the bottom to "Poster Upload"
  • Click on Upload to upload your poster, then Save & Submit



Blitz are 3 minutes long oral presentations, with visual support (PDF or PowerPoint).



Your presentation details (session, date, time, etc.) will be provided to you as soon as the program is finalised and published, end of July approximately.



The technical program will be presented in parallel sessions and we strongly encourage you to present in English as there will be no simultaneous interpretation during the topical sessions. If you plan to speak in French, please confirm to the Secretariat ( as soon as possible for planning purposes.



Your abstract will be included in the final program. Sentinel North reserves the right to edit as needed.

    The information below is the archived Call for abstracts for Sentinel North Annual Meeting 2018.



    Sentinel North welcomes any presentation that can contribute to a better understanding of changes in the northern environment and their impacts on circumpolar North residents and their health. The themes of the annual scientific meeting are closely related to Sentinel North's transdisciplinary research program, as outlined by its conceptual framework. These include, but are not limited to:

    • The complex systems and networks of the North;
    • The impact of climate change on ecosystems, ecosystem services and northern infrastructure;
    • Innovation in optics-photonics for monitoring extreme environments;
    • The impact of light on northern ecosystems and societies;
    • Microbiomes as sentinels for the environment and health in the North;
    • Research in data management and predictive modeling; and
    • Optimizing knowledge transfer in a context of sustainable development and health in the North.

    In a transdisciplinarity effort, contributions involving researchers from the fields of natural sciences and engineering, health science, humanities and social sciences are encouraged.


    Submission types

    General information

    The call for abstracts is open to all (researchers and students from Université Laval and international, research centers, current or potential partners of the program, private sector, etc.).

    Abstracts of 500 words or less may be submitted for presentations in the form of oral presentations (15 minutes including questions) and / or scientific posters.

    In addition to oral and poster presentations, students also have the opportunity to present the content of their posters in the form of Student Blitz (3-minute oral presentation).

    Notifications of acceptance will be sent no later than Friday, June 22, 2018.


    Students poster competition

    Sentinel North is holding a poster competition open to all Masters and PhD students who have submitted an approved abstract (poster) and are registered for the meeting. Cash prizes of $ 1,000, $ 600 and $ 400 will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively, and $ 250 will be awarded for honourable mentions. Prizes will be awarded at the Wednesday evening closing banquet.


    Submission process

    Submissions are made via the online submission tool (see link at the bottom of the page).
    Before submitting an abstract, you will need to create a profile with valid email address and password.
    You will be able to save your session and make changes to your abstract until the deadline, provided that it has not been submitted for evaluation.
    An email confirming the receipt of each abstract will be forwarded to the email address provided.
